Billy Joel on Sunday night added a sixth consecutive sold-out performance at US Airways Center to his list of accomplishments in Phoenix. …The man can really work a room. … The set was peppered with impromptu, unexpected covers — from a snatch of the “Layla” piano coda (“I didn't write it; I wish I did”) to “I'm Into Something Good,” the Eagles' “Take It Easy” (the Winslow, Arizona reference drawing huge applause), Elmer Bernstein's theme to “The Magnificent Seven,” “Not Fade Away” as a lead-in to “Don't Ask Me Why,” “Highway to Hell” with hilarious vocals by a member of his road crew, introduced as Chainsaw from Phoenix, and “A Hard Day's Night.” – The Arizona Republic
The audience at the sold out US Airways Center knew when the first note was played on Joel's Steinway, the singer-songwriter really likes working. His dexterity on the ivories was apparent when he opened with “Miami 2017 (I've Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway).” …He gyrated his hips like Elvis and tossing the mic stand during “It's Still Rock and Roll To Me.” He sang “Big Shot” with a towel over his head, but not once did he loosen his tie, unbutton his shirt, or take off his suit jacket. …He closed with “Only The Good Die Young.” Nowadays, a 65-year-old is considered young, especially one who still knows how to put on a good show. – Phoenix New Times
He's still got it. He is still a master performer. Joel played his piano and sang for two hours even after making fun of his age at the US Airways Center in Phoenix covering his entire career which dates back to the early 1970s. Of course, Joel played his hits like “New York State of Mind,” “Pressure” and “Big Shot.” But he also played a few lesser known tracks. He snuck in “Zanzibar,” “And So It Goes” and “The Ballad of Billy the Kid” between his biggest commercial successes. …If he is tired of playing songs like, “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant” he doesn't show it. Joel still banged away at those keys like he was hustling for fans in stuffy, smoky clubs. – KTAR
